Home security is one subject that never ceases to be of importance. In fact, keeping one’s home safe and secure at all times is key to overall well-being. And while we may be tempted to let our guards down at time, we cannot. Take a look at these tips to keep you, your home and your loved ones safe during the week:
Monday: Fire Safety
While there’s no need to engage in a general revision of your home for possible fire safety hazards every week, remembering to at least think about fire safety one day per week is not a bad idea. Smoke detectors should be tested twice a year, and batteries should be changed if there is some sort of problem. Gas valves must be closed when not in use, and exposed wires and electrical cords should be remedied as soon as they are discovered.
Tuesday: Lock Up
Tuesdays can be a day to make sure that all of the locks around your house are in working order. Call in a locksmith if you detect problems. If you sometimes forget to lock doors at night or when you’re leaving, try out different reminder-mechanisms to help you to keep on top of things.
Wednesday: Look Out
Read police reports and watch the local news to find out potential home security threats in your area. You may be surprised to find out that threats surround homes located in even the sleepiest towns in America. Talk to neighbors about any recent alarming events, ranging from neighborhood hoodlums to break-ins to vandalism. It can’t hurt to be aware.
Thursday: Indoor Hazards
With so much effort spent on keeping intruders out, you may be tempted to ignore potential dangers within your home. Broken floor boards, wobbly railings, and slippery bath tubs – all of these things can prove hazardous. Pay attention to possible problems within your home on Thursdays. If you have small children, be especially aware. On Thursdays, make sure that dangerous items are kept out of reach of small children and make sure that potential hazards like washing machines and home fitness equipment are off limits.
Friday: Set the Alarm
Friday is the day to make sure that all is in working order with your home alarm system. Thinking of going away for the weekend? You don’t want to leave your home unprotected. While we may tend to relax on the issue of home safety on Fridays, we should not. Making a conscious effort to think about home security on the last day of the week is a fine way to set a safe tone for the weekend. Write yourself a note, leave yourself reminders, and do whatever you can to make sure that your alarm is set the whole weekend long.
The chaos of weekdays can be overwhelming. Stress, however, is no excuse for lapses in home security. Keep these daily reminders in mind and you’re sure to be fine all week long.
